Description:

Center for Employment Training’s Immigration and Citizenship Program (CET-ICP) is looking for committed, culturally sensitive and enthusiastic individuals to assist aspiring new citizens! As a Citizenship class instructor/volunteer, you will teach and practice the basic elements of the U.S. naturalization exam.

The classes are held year round and consist of a ten week rotating curriculum. Classes help students learn the basics of U.S. history and government, as well as the English reading and writing skills necessary to pass their U.S. citizenship interviews.

Interested volunteers will receive a thorough training, will have opportunities to shadow established instructors and will be expected to make at least a 6-12 month commitment. Most of our instructors have been with us for several years. Classes are held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings 6:00p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Volunteering at CET-ICP is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in acquiring new skills and in serving the community in a very tangible way. As a small non-profit program, we rely on the support of volunteers to provide essential services to our clients and students.

CET-ICP clients are immigrants of diverse ethnicities, humble, and hardworking individuals that commonly come to America looking for better opportunities in life and/or to re-unite with family. Our clients come with different levels of education, from minimal elementary schooling to graduate degrees.

If you are interested in joining our passionate and dedicated volunteer team, send an email to Monica Limas, Program Director at mlimas@cet-icp.org. Your time and assistance will be greatly appreciated by our aspiring students, who are working hard to attain their dream of Citizenship.

Thank you for your interest in supporting our efforts. We look forward to hearing from you!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Employment Training (CET), an economic and community development corporation, is to promote human development and education by providing people with marketable skills training and supportive services that contribute to self-sufficiency. Based on CET's philosophy of self-determination, the Immigration and Citizenship Program mission is to empower the community in Santa Clara County by providing quality immigration and citizenship services and by promoting and strengthening civic involvement among the immigrant population.

Description

Santa Clara County's immigrant population exceeds 600,000 people, many of whom have not completed a high school education, and face multiple social justice and economic barriers. In this demographic, a lack of literacy and employment skills severely limits cultural integration, employment opportunities, and economic self-sufficiency. The CET Immigration and Citizenship Program has effectively assessed and addressed the needs of this often overlooked population. It has provided edcuation on citizenship and immigration and legal services to more than 100,000 immigrants from numerous communities for more than twenty-five years. CET continues to be a highly regarded community resource for citizenship and literacy education. CET's ESL Citizenship and Spanish literacy classes address the lack of education in a population often relegated to the margins in employment and the community. By extension, they address a larger community need for skilled workers, active parents, and a population that prizes education and economic self-sufficiency.
