Health Equity Intern Job Description

Functional Title: Health Equity Intern

Term of Internship: Spring 2017 (unpaid)

Reports to: Health Equity Director/Health Equity Specialist

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

American Heart Association intern Deliverables:

  • Intern will assist Health Equity staff implementing health equity priority programs, Vestido Rojo, Go Red Sundays (Days), Simple Cooking with Heart, CPR training and Check. Change. Control. (CCC) program.

  • Based on the positive results of Check It, Change It, Check. Change.Control. is rolling out across the United States. Modeled after Check It, Change It, this AHA/ASA program empowers people to learn about, monitor and manage their blood pressures through a combination of resources.

  • Vestido Rojo (Red Dress) is a half day interactive educational event offered in both English and Spanish. Participant’s journey through a series of health-focused workshops designed to provide experiential education aimed at increasing knowledge of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and risk reduction strategies.

  • Intern will assist Health Equity Staff to establish nutritional educational opportunities in the market through simple cooking with heart demonstrations.

  • Intern will meet with program partners targeted for involvement in the program along with Health Equity staff to recruit at least 400 participants in the programs.

  • Intern will work with partner universities to prepare students as program mentors and train them accordingly for this role.

  • Intern will assist with incentive program creation for the program for participants, mentors, and organizations enrolled.

  • Intern will provide technical support to committed organizations in the program.

  • Intern will train and help establish CCC accounts for new program partners

  • Intern will identify additional CCC program partners to reach enrollment goal of 1200 participants and maintain a retention goal of 25%

  • Intern will assist Health Equity staff in other ways identified as needed.

Experience and Education

Experience working in the community and program implementation. Volunteer management experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Skill in presenting programs, and educational material to community members as well as corporate workers.
  • Ability to participate in meetings, work in a team environment and interact with all levels of AHA staff, volunteers and public.
