YourWords STL is a volunteer, after-school, tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.

In our first year of operation (2015-2016), we worked with a fantastic, motivated group of boys and young men aged 16-19 at Marygrove in Florissant. Marygrove is a school and residence with therapeutic programming for children all over St. Louis who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. The campus is located on 44 acres of greenery, overlooking the Missouri river.

In our 2nd year, we expanded to Lift for Life Gym in the spring of 2017 as our second main location. We also completed collaborative writing projects between students at Parkway NE Middle School and St. Louis Catholic Academy, as well as Marygrove's 5-6-year-olds. In March of 2017, we brought in renowned poets Kevin Coval and Nate Marshall to over 900 area students culminating in a slam poetry event at The Stage at KDHX (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyIPSmDvhr8)

We will continue to work with these group in our third year (2017-2018). In addition to the young men at Drury House, and the young women at Lift for Life Gym, we will add weekly programming at Sequoia House this Fall.

YourWords STL is also discussed further collaborative projects with past and new schools around the area. We are devoted to connecting students between all parts of St. Louis. We plan to compensate workshop leaders with a small stipend, as well as hire a professional fundraiser and full-time Executive Director. To grow, YourWords STL will rely on new grants. We are hoping to recruit some experienced grant writers to help us achieve our goals and bring under-served voices to at St. Louis that needs to hear them.

Description

YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in underserved areas of St. Louis. We partner with local organizations to provide workshops for their populations.

We partnered with Marygrove Children’s Home a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn from 2015-2022. Starting in 2022, our tutoring has moved to Clay Community Resource Center in the Hyde Park neighborhood, offering tutoring twice weekly. The tutor volunteers work with students each week on homework as needed for school.

We provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations throughout St. Louis. Each year we bring students from various backgrounds together in collaborative writing projects. The tutoring we provide students, whether in person or virtual, becomes even more urgent and impactful, as disparities in resources grow in the wake of a pandemic.

YourWords STL is seeking volunteer tutors, willing to commit to 60-minute weekly tutoring sessions. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and we prefer tutors live in or near St. Louis MO. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
