YourWords STL is an all volunteer, after-school, tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.
In this particular volunteer program, we meet each Wednesday from 4:00 -5:30 PM at the Marygrove campus located in Florissant, MO, on 44 beautiful acres overlooking the Missouri river. Marygrove is a school and residence with therapeutic programming for youth who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn.
We tutor a group of young men, ages 16 -19, from the transitional life program. Each week, we do about 30 minutes of general homework help according to each student's needs that day, followed by a 45-minute writing exercise led by one of our published authors/poets. Tutors do NOT need to be experienced writers or teachers. We are seeking people with a wide variety of backgrounds, an enthusiasm for reading and writing, and compassion for under-served youth.
We will provide tutor orientation, and our creative writing program director will lead the sessions. To get started, Marygrove requires a (free) background check and application. We are happy to provide documentation of your service hours if needed for a school requirement.
Ideally we are seeking tutors who can attend most of the weekly sessions, as this provides for a valuable mentoring relationship to develop. However, we also always need tutors who can attend sporadically to fill in for our regular tutors when they need to take a day off.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions, and thank you for considering this opportunity!
