Program/Department Overview:

JVS launched "English for Employment" classes in East Boston in September for refugees and immigrants whose goal is to find employment. In addition to English classes, clients receive career coaching including job search assistance, resume and cover letter writing and interview preparation.

Responsibilities:

Assist teacher in vocational English class for immigrants and refugees. Topics include improving English and communication skills to obtain employment, job search and job retention techniques, orientation to the American workplace, financial literacy and life skills. Work with individuals and small groups of students who need extra support. This is a multi-level class, so volunteers will work with low-level literacy students some days, and higher-level conversational students on other days.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Tutoring or teaching experience preferred.
  • Comfortable working with all English learner levels.
  • Interest in working with people of various linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
  • Flexibility-responsibilities will vary on a day-to-day basis.

Classes will be held M-Th from 9:00-12:00 and 1:30-4:30. Volunteers may choose one or more classes to assist, though must commit to the same day and time each week.
