Program Description

The overall goal of the Promise Scholars Program is to increase the college going rate and to prepare students in the Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) to be successful in a global society by increasing their high school completion rates through exposure to, and encouragement for, postsecondary learning experiences (including technical programs).

Position Overview

Under direction, this position will be responsible for overseeing program fundraising efforts. The VISTA will work with community partners and help create sustainable streams of resources through special events and individual donor cultivation. This position also assists at community events and upholds all requirements set forth by the AmeriCorps VISTA program.

This position reports directly to the Resource Development Administrator at the Ontario-Montclair School District.

Essential Functions

• Access fundraising and donor tracking needs for organization
• Develop draft plan for a fundraising situational assessment
• Research best practices for donor tracking and cultivation
• Develop a structured system for volunteer utilization, business sponsorships, and marketing for runner participants for the City of Ontario Community 5K Run
• Increase 5K Run participation by 20%
• Develop donor cultivation process and support system
• Identify, recruit, and oversee a minimum of 10 volunteers to serve as a Retired School Administrators Advisory Committee
• Create a Case for Support Binder that includes gathered data and stories of program success to be used for grant proposals and donor presentations
• Provide updated reports (number of students served, number of volunteers recruited, etc.) as necessary to be presented at both external and internal meetings.
• Assist with the population of activity for the program calendar
• Attend relevant community meetings, events and activities to help promote Promise Scholar, AmeriCorps VISTA, and the program’s volunteer opportunities

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have completed an Associate’s Degree or higher
• Must clear a criminal background check (DOJ and FBI; National Sex Offender Public Website Database)
• Experience working in a college or career readiness program preferred
• Must follow the AmeriCorps Code of Conduct while serving
• Ability to create positive relationships with site staff
• Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable speaking in public and working with diverse audiences
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks
• Possess leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the team
• Ability to problem-solve and approach situations creatively
• Technology/computer literacy is essential
  • An interest in and/or a background in community service and volunteerism or volunteer management
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid California Driver’s License and minimum qualifying insurance

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, including communications and office machines such as computers, calculators, facsimile, copiers, etc.
• Must be able to lift/move objects to 25 lbs.
• Sedentary work involves mostly sitting, but may require the ability to stand, stoop, or squat for various periods of time.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity required for typing and computer use.

This is a full-time, 12-month volunteer term of service from March 2017 to March 2018.
