K9 Youth Alliance Volunteer Job Description

Thank you for your interest in enriching the lives of underserved teens while they help prepare abandoned dogs for new homes!

Volunteer Objective

Be a part of the K9YA team and work directly with our students as they prepare shelter dogs for permanent homes.

Program Structure and Schedule

2.5 hours per day - 11:30am-2:00pm

5 days per week - Monday-Friday

January 23, 2017 - February 10, 2017

6 students paired with 1 dog each and 1 volunteer per pair

Job Description

  • Arrive at 11:30 for staff pow wow
  • Potty walk - bring participating dogs from kennel 15 minutes prior to program to potty
  • Program - 1 st hour is training. Student will be teaching the dog according to K9YA trainer (all methods are force free and rewards based) skills that help him/her get adopted. Volunteer will support/clarify/help student teach their dog partner
  • Program - 2 nd hour is "classroom/quiet" activities. Volunteer will participate in activities as needed and support students, both group and 1:1, that reinforce concepts students are learning in their training experience (e.g communication, relationship building, empathy, etc.)
  • Volunteer will be alert to safety of team they are working with as well as the larger group during all aspects of program.
  • Volunteer returns dog to kennel at the conclusion of program each day.

Qualifications

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Enjoy working with young people between the ages of 13-18 and dogs
  • Pass a background check
  • Attend Pasadena Humane Society, K9YA and Youth Service Provider trainings (@ 1 hour each)
  • Abie to follow the training protocols as set forth during program by K9YA trainer
  • Able to get dogs in and out of kennels with confidence
  • Comfortable handling dogs of all sizes and breeds
  • Wear appropriate clothing, K9YA T-shirt, training pouch and name badge (all will be provided for you)

Time Commitment

If accepted into the program volunteers must commit to work at least 3 days per week for the length of the program.
