ORGANIZATION: Sunnyside Community Services

Sunnyside Community Services, based in Queens, New York, offers a range of life-enhancing programs that benefit approximately 14,000 individuals per year. From Early Childhood Education to Senior Services, we provide programs for all ages.

Our services include: pre-kindergarten and after school programs; college prep and career programs for teens and young adults;

Our after-school programs provide fun and challenging enrichment activities for your children. We provide after-school programs at P.S. 150 and P.S. 199 in Sunnyside for elementary school students (grades K - 5). Programs for middle school students (grades 6 - 8) are available at SCS’ main site and at the Boulevard Family Residence in Elmhurst.

The Sunnyside Cornerstone Program at Woodside Houses provides opportunities for children, teenagers, and adults to participate in structured after-school programs and drop-in activities including performing arts and music, athletics, computers, reading, chess, and more.

Our Needs: Volunteer Tutors

What We’re Looking For Volunteers to do

  • Lead tutoring sessions while supported by staff
  • Support participants with homework completion and a subject of your choice, including: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies;
  • Serve as a role model and build positive relationships with youth;
  • Strong background in one or more of the following academic subjects: English, Math, Science, and/or Social Studies
  • Previous experience working with youth;
  • Posses enthusiasm and patience
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to make weekly commitments
  • Previous tutoring experience (a plus)
  • At least one 2 hour to 2.5 hour session per week, Monday-Thursday. Times vary between 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, based on youth/volunteer and program schedules.
  • HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE students encouraged to apply
