Be a part of the amazing Buckingham Youth Brigade Jr. community by becoming a tutor for our middle school students! We are seeking a reading tutor to help our youth with reading comprehension and literacy skills. We meet every Wednesday from 4-6pm (flexible timing) at our local community center (near Ballston & Virginia Sq. Metro).

These students are an incredible group of neighborhood kids from the Buckingham Neighborhood, many of which come from an immigrant background. They have grown up together, and meet twice a week. Once a week they gather, play games, and build community. They also meet every Wednesday where we utilize our fantastic tutors for Homework Help!

This position will be paired with one student to ensure a greater learning experience for the him/her.

Volunteer and contribute to our youth's academic potential!

Description

BU-GATA, short for Buckingham and Gates of Arlington , was established by Latino renters in 1992.

BU-GATA was created to stop displacement from a neighborhood multi-family complex, the Gates of Arlington. As the organization grew stronger, residents began to broaden BU-GATA’s focus to include community stability, and in 1998, addressed another neighborhood need - youth leadership development - by creating the Buckingham Youth Brigade.

As a community-based non-profit, BU-GATA has focused on defending tenants, educating residents about their rights, and fighting to preserve the community when gentrification threatens.

BU-GATA's mission is to serve Arlington's low-income, immigrant communities through education and leadership development programs, focusing on education and civic engagement in public policy issues.
