The Emergency Weather Response Warming Center will provide a safe place for homeless people to sleep on nights when the outside temperature could lead to hypothermia. It will be open for one week in January and one week in February if the outside temperature is predicted to be at or below 20 degreesFahrenheit over any given night.

The St. John UCC center will operate, as needed, from January 7 through 14 and again from February 18 through 25. If the temperature is expected to reach 20 degrees Fahrenheit overnight the shelter will:

  • Open its doors from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. - the center will be housed in Old Fellowship Hall

  • Provide something light for guests to eat when they arrive

  • Provide breakfast in the morni

Volunteers are needed to staff the warming center overnight, as needed. Volunteers must:

  • Participate in a one-hour training session at St. John UCC from 7 to 8 p.m. on either

    • Tuesday, November 29 or

    • Thursday, January 5

  • Agree to and be approved by a background check

  • Be willing to be on call every night of the weeks in which the center may be open

  • Be willing to stay awake for the better part of the night - 3 volunteers will be on duty all night, with 2 remaining awake and 1 allowed to sleep, on a rotating basis

  • Follow the comprehensive rules and procedures manual that will be available for each volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Pastor Lisa Martin at 636-946-0961.
