ABOUT MORE:
MORE is a refugee services and learning center located in the North End of St. Paul. We have three programs: Education, Mental Health, and Social Services. Within these programs, we offer several services including English Language Classes, Job Club for ESL, private therapy, support groups, case management, and basic needs assistance. We serve individuals and families from a number of different countries including Burma, Bhutan, El Salvador, Mexico, Palestine, Vietnam, Syria, and Honduras.
ABOUT THE EDUCATION PROGRAM:
Our program includes 4 levels of English language classes ranging from pre-literate to high-intermediate. We also have a Distance Learning program to provide additional support for students who would like it, as well as the option to learn at home for those with jobs. Our Job Club also is offered for lower level and higher level learners.
VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:
The Education Program is looking for volunteers to fill a number of positions:
-Classroom assistant for all levels
-1:1 and small group tutor
-Computer Lab assistant for higher levels
-Job Club assistant for lower and higher levels
SCHEDULE
Our volunteer opportunities are flexible. Volunteer opportunities are available beginning at 1 hour per week and on. Our hours when volunteer opportunities are available are Monday-Friday 9:00AM-2:15PM.
We especially could use help in the mornings right now!
REQUIREMENTS AND TRAINING
No previous work with refugees or in a classroom is required. No foreign language skills are required. We simply ask all of our volunteers to be open, willing to learn and share their knowledge, and treat everyone at MORE with respect.
The Minnesota Literacy Council provides a training that all volunteers must complete either before their time at MORE, or within 2 months of starting. Interested parties are also welcome to shadow a class beforehand to learn more about the program and to see if this is a good fit. Below is the link to the training.
