Winooski Youth Basketball volunteers will help teach kids in grades K-5 basketball fundamentals while enthusiastically promoting good sportsmanship, positive attitudes, and love of the game. Each volunteer will choose to work primarily with either the younger (grades K-2) or older (grades 3-5) group during the weekly sessions that are held on Saturday mornings. Volunteer coaches need to be able to effectively demonstrate ball-handling, passing, and shooting skills and help instruct kids-- both individually and in small groups-- on proper techniques. Volunteers may also be asked to run some drills and/or lead some mini-games with groups, as needed, and to coach informal teams during scrimmages. The weekly commitment-- 9:15 to 11:15AM on Saturdays-- includes some minimal setup time and a very brief coaches meeting at the close of each session. Volunteers need to be able commit to being available for at least 6 of the 8 weekly sessions and are asked to notify Program staff in advance when they will not be able to attend. The 8 sessions will be held in the Winooski High School gymnasium and cafeteria from January 7 to February 25 (Grades K-2 runs from Jan 7 to Feb 11 and Grades 3-5 runs from Jan 7 to Feb 25.). All volunteers are expected to prioritize safety, having fun, and building participants' self-confidence in the course of coaching skills and teaching basic game rules.

Volunteer expectations:
- helping with setup and reviewing plans, 9:15-9:30AM
- helping with break down and coaches debrief, 11:00-11:15AM
- greeting kids as they arrive
- demonstrating basic skills and coaching kids on how to perform them
- leading some group drills and mini-games (with directions provided)
- help transition kids and equipment between activities
- coaching a team during informal scrimmages
- be reliable and consistent (committing to at least 6 sessions)
- possess some precursory knowledge of basketball basics
- have the ability to communicate clearly
- must be able to pass a screening test, including a background check.
