  • Formed in 1955, Beach Cities Health District is a public agency that provides health care services to the communities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach
  • The Beach Cities Health District communicates with residents, customers, media, members and clients through a variety of written channels. This executive-level volunteer will support the BCHD Communications department by writing and editing copy, and ensuring that all written pieces are clear, error-free and of professional quality.


  • Writing content for both internal and external audiences including newsletters, news releases, letters, media pitches, advertisements, newspaper editorial pieces, presentations, fact sheets, websites, etc.
  • Participating in brainstorming sessions and proposing new ideas
  • Researching information about assigned topics
  • Conducting interviews and gathering quotes

Qualifications Needed:

  • Knowledge of English grammar and punctuation
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style guidelines
  • Experience with Microsoft Word
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Versatile style, with ability to assess audience’s needs, both internal and external, and develop copy that communicates clearly and concisely with them
  • Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to producing quality product
  • Familiarity with public relations and crafting news releases for media
  • Understanding of print and online media
  • Knowledge of health and fitness topics a plus

  • Participate in simple intake process conducted by Volunteer Services
  • Interview with supervisor
  • Complete trial writing assignment for Communications Manager to assess writing style and creativity

Screening Process:

If the position fits the volunteer, the following screening process (at no cost to volunteer) will take place:

  • Criminal background check (if over the age of 18)


The following training will be provided:

  • Attendance to a BCHD Orientation (conducted every month)
  • Bi-weekly meetings with Communications department

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Keep track and submit all volunteer hours each month
  • Stay within compliance of all volunteer policies and procedures
