The Recycling Internship is a great program for individuals looking for work in the recycling industry or in any warehouse environment. As a Recycling Intern, you’ll be responsible for understanding Free Geek’s recycling protocol, teaching and training volunteers in recycling programs, assisting in material flow, and performing some advanced deconstruction projects. You’ll also be trained in warehouse safety procedures and pallet-jack operation.
Job Title: Recycling Intern
Hours Weekly: At least 7.25 hours/week
Free Geek Supervisor: Ramo Garcilazo
Responsibilities- A recycling intern will be trained to:
- Orient, teach, and support volunteers who are deconstructing desktop computers, modems, and other small electronics
- Sort recyclable material
- Perform advanced deconstruction tasks
- Assist in managing material flow through the recycling area including pallet jack operation, swapping bins and prioritizing tasks
- Promote the safety of themselves, volunteers, and the environment
- Detail-oriented approach to problem-solving
- Not afraid of getting dirty
- Interest in learning about e-waste recycling practices
- Ability to teach people from a range of backgrounds
- Ability to comfortably lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods of time
- Experience using hand tools is a plus
- Ability to speak Spanish is a plus

Description
At Free Geek, volunteers may earn a free desktop PC by volunteer 24 hours in any of our programs.
In Recycling, volunteers may:
-sort incoming donated hardware
-disassemble computers and other electronic equipment
-transport equipment from receiving to testing areas
In Refurb, volunteers will:
-learn about internal computer components
-evaluate, quality check, and refurbish PCs and laptops
-may advance to iMacs and other hardware testing
In Internships, volunteers gain:
-100+ hours of training and experience in advanced reuse, recycling, or non-profit administration activities
-leadership skill building
-professional references and letters of recommendation (not usually available for non-intern volunteers)
