A Finisher is a detail-oriented volunteer that is able to provide finishing steps on the tax return. A Finisher will sit with taxpayer to explain the return, answer any taxpayer questions, and confirm critical information with the taxpayer. The Finisher will then obtain taxpayer signatures and provide the taxpater a copy of their return. Successfully complete ADVANCED Tax Law Certification.

Tasks:

• Explain the taxpayer’s return and answer any taxpayer questions

• Review all relevant documents along with asking any follow up questions if needed

• Inform taxpayers that they are responsible for the information on their return before asking the taxpayer to sign the return.

• Secure taxpayer signatures on Form8879 for e-filed returns. Secure taxpayer signatures on returns for paper-filed returns and assemble packets for taxpayers to mail.

• Provide taxpayers a copy of their return

• Ensure that all taxpayer documents are confidentially and securely stored.

• Ensure that finished returns are marked for e-file submission or are marked as paper filed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Satisfaction in being able to work independently

Ability to deal with taxpayers and ask as many questions as needed

Attention to small details, able to work in a fast-paced environment

Training Required:

Finisher requires a minimum of 16 hours of training; receiving training on ethics, tax law, and tax software. Highly encouraged to certify for Cancelation of Debt and Health Savings Accounts, Military returns, and Foreign Student returns

Suggested volunteer commitment:

We encourage volunteers to sign up to volunteer at least 1-2 times a week as their schedule allows.
