RYP is seeking volunteers to help out our brand new Syrian students during the school day to improve their basic skills and understanding. You will pull out 1-3 students from class to help them with their alphabet, sight words, basic math skills, and reading.
Students and teachers can use help Wednesdays between 8:45 am and 10:30 am. Tutors will stay 1.5 hours, helping 1-3 students for two 45 minute sessions.
Why it Matters: In summer 2016, the International Rescue Committee resettled a number of Syrian refugee families in Southwest Baltimore, which increased the number of English Language learners at Beechfield Elementary/Middle School from less than 20 to nearly 50 students. This sudden jump in a new population has proven difficult for Beechfield’s teachers as well as the youth and their parents. RYP has been approved by the school’s administration to recruit, train, and place volunteers to assist students during the school day through individual or small-group activities to help increase students’ English language skills and basic subject proficiency. Volunteers will make a positive impact by encouraging and supporting students’ learning goals, helping make a difference in the children’s successful integration into their new community.
