About

Intake Interviewer volunteers have the responsibility to monitor taxpayers to ensure they have the information, and documents required to complete a tax return. Review paperwork thoroughly in order to determine what level of preparer the taxpayer will require. Scan the taxpayer’s information, and documents to ensure proper tax filing. Answer any questions the taxpayer may have about the filing process. Successfully certify in Tax Law at the ADVANCED level, attend Community Action Intake Screener training.

Tasks:

  • Verify the taxpayer’s photo ID and that they have Social Security cards or ITIN letters for ALL household members.

  • Secure releases to use and disclose taxpayer information.

  • Screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they will need.

  • Ensure the taxpayer has brought the required documents (e.g. valid picture identification, Social Security card(s), W-2, 1099’s, last year’s return) from which a tax return can be completed. Scan required documents into Drake Document Manager.

  • Complete a thorough interview of taxpayers to ensure collection of complete information to prepare a tax return.

  • Identify the certification level required by the tax return and mark it appropriately.

  • Ensure that taxpayer documentation is securely and confidentially stored for tax preparation.

  • Offer taxpayers the ability to sign up for a Financial Check-up and secure taxpayer authorization for Community Action to obtain a copy of their credit report.

  • Willingness to share time and skills during filing season

  • Pride in performing tasks completely and accurately

  • Ability to deal with volunteers, and the public in a helpful and supportive manner in a fast paced environment

  • Friendly, dependable, and flexible

  • Strong organizational and group management skills

  • Must be able to pay attention to detail and ask questions relating to client situations

  • Training Required:

  • Intakes require a minimum of 18 hours of training; receiving training on intake processes, ethics, tax law, and tax software

Suggested volunteer commitment:

We encourage volunteers to sign up to volunteer at least 1-2 times a week as their schedule allows
