Green Iowa is partnering with the Polk County Conservation Department in 2018 for a third year of maintaining Easter Lake Park and restoring its Woodland properties. Activities include invasive species removal, litter removal, and trail maintenance (stay tuned for tree plantings!); this is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time outdoors and positively contribute to our community's greenspace.

Tasks Include:

  • Identifying invasive plants for removal after a brief orientation
  • Manual removal of invasive plants with tools such as loppers and handsaws
  • Application of pre-diluted, ready to use herbicide (only by individuals 18 or older)
  • Transporting removed plants to an accessible location for park managers to appropriately address
  • Removal of trash around Easter Lake
  • Enjoying a morning or afternoon in a natural area while learning about and positively impacting a local ecosystem!

Although we welcome groups and family participation, individuals less than 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Due to poison ivy, volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.

We will be engaging in ongoing maintenance and can accomodate individuals and groups. Let us facilitate your volunteer days! Email us at any time during the year at giaoutreach@gdmhabitat.org or call 515-471-8686 ext. 104 with any inquiries.

About Green Iowa AmeriCorps - Des Moines

Location:

2200 E Euclid Ave, Des Moines, IA 50317, US

Mission Statement

Helping make Iowans more energy efficient through low-impact home weatherization, energy education, and community outreach.

Description

Operated through the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education, and hosted by Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a program founded upon the increasing need for energy and environmental improvement and education.

Concieved in 2009, Green Iowa's initial purpose was to increase the sustainable use of energy and environmental resources in several Iowa communities struggling to rebuild from the devastating floods of 2008. Since the start of the flood recovery, Green Iowa has been an active community partner; members are trained as energy auditors to contribute to a comprehensive home energy plan, allowing the program to offer home energy audits and weatherization at no cost to property owners. Other community involvement includes deconstruction, rehab, and repurpose projects; creating energy and environmental education programs for all ages; and developing and facilitating environmental and energy related events.

As of this year, we now have seven sites spread throughout Iowa in Black Hawk, Dubuque, Johnson, Jefferson, Linn, Polk, and Winneshiek counties.
