ORGANIZATION: One Common Heart / Soambá Panamá

Niña

We are a fledgling organization, a collaboration with the Emberá-Wounaan indigenous people in Panama. We aim to empower rural villages to teach and celebrate their traditional way of life, and to create thriving, resilient and enduring communities in alignment with nature and their ancestral world view. We offer villages an educational program that combines their own elders teaching their youth the ancestral skills that are otherwise being lost, with training in sustainable development techniques and models taught by experts. This way we complement the original low-impact, sustainable survival methods with new technologies and ideas to expand personal and community choice for a vibrant future.

We are at the transition point from crowdfunding from friends and family, to growing and formalizing our fundraising efforts. This will take lots of grant applications! We are excited for the chance to share our vision with foundations and offer them a way to put their funds to an inspiring use. Hopefully you are inspired too and want to help us spread our vision widely. Volunteers who are willing to both research and write grant applications are super appreciated!

Mission Statement

We support indigenous people as they celebrate and teach their ancestral knowledge and create thriving modern communities aligned with their traditional vision.

Description

We collaborate with the Emberá and Wounaan people in Darién, Panama. We sponsor programs of classes in which elders teach the youngers the traditional culture and language, aiming to sustain personal and communal options for independence and resilience. To support a community's own desires for sustainable technological development, we also offer workshops and discussions about sustainable growth options.

We are guided by an all-Indigenous Advisory Council, which since 2017 has focused us on language. We proudly ran the first ever in-community classes in the Emberá language in 2018, and are aiming to expand that work.

We are inspired by these and other organizations: Pachamama Alliance, Four Worlds International, The Barefoot College, Local Futures, Schooling the World, and Cultural Survival.
