Work with Adult Literacy Students at one of the five Brooklyn Public Library Learning Centers. Help them reach their personal goals. Lead reading and writing activities for small groups of adult learners who read below the fifth grade level. Assist them in using technology.
We provide a 20 hour Volunteer Tutor Training where you will learn the BPL’s Literacy Program’s philosophy, how to use the library’s resources for instruction, and how to create effective lesson plans. Professional staff will encourage your development in this richly rewarding field.
Volunteers must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a love of reading and writing. Volunteers are asked for a one year commitment to tutoring either 2 - 2 hours sessions, or 1 - 3-hour session per week. To learn more about the Brooklyn Public Library Learning Centers, please visit the BPL website at http://www.bklynpubliclibrary.org/support/volunteer/adult-literacy-volunteer-tutor.
