Homework Helpers - Westwood Middle School, Winter Haven

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Volunteer Polk

  • 4 people are interested

Think back. Do you remember . . . as we have all been there . . . the day when after trying and trying to learn a concept - (tie your shoe, pronounce a word, understand a story or a math equation), with a little help from someone - - it finally clicked and at last you mastered it? What a great feeling! Homework Helpers get to make a difference in the lives of Westwood Middle school students (Grades 6-8) by helping them master a skill/concept for which they may be experiencing a little challenge.

  • Choose any day(s) - Thursday afternoons from 4:20 p.m. - 5:20 p.m. at the school.
  • You will only be asked to help in subject matters for which you feel comfortable assisting: Math, Science, Social Studies or Language Arts.
  • Homework Helpers range in age from 16 - adult and should have advanced in school into high school or higher.
  • While retired educators and education majors are welcome, professional training/education is NOT a requirement.

Also a great assignment for adults whose employers provide paid leave time to volunteer to assist students. Students still in high school will need a faculty recommendation form, signed by either your school Guidance Counselor or Principal, verifying that you are in good academic standing in school. For Adults who are not already approved as a Polk School District volunteer, there is a nominal fee for conducting the Florida required background screen (only $25 - compared to the $75 fee paid by those not serving in schools). Make a difference in a child's life by showing someone cares about their academic success!
