ORGANIZATION: JVS, Jewish Vocational Service

Classroom assistant needed for a computer class for employees at Mass General Hospital. The students will be learning email, internet, simple Microsoft Windows 8 navigation, and Microsoft Word. A volunteer will help students follow along with the material and help students individually as they work on assignments given by the teacher.

Schedule: Tuesdays 3:30-5:00pm
Commitment Dec-June

There are no elevators in this building, so volunteers must be able to walk up 3 flights of stairs.

Volunteer Qualifications:

Patience and understanding of adult learners who are new to using a computer. Basic knowledge of computers, expert knowledge not necessary.

Additional requirements:

To be a volunteer at MGH, you must go through the MGH volunteer orientation which includes meeting the MGH volunteer coordinator, submitting proof of immunizations (or getting them done at MGH occupational health), and logging hours in their system. Going through this process makes you eligible for additional volunteer benefits including free parking, invitations to special volunteer events, and more!

Program/Department Overview:

JVS works with employers to develop and customize training and education services for their employees at their location. Based on the employers’ business and workforce development goals, JVS will provide: English language classes (for non-native speakers), adult basic education, pre-college classes, customer service training, effective communication classes, supervisory training, computer classes, and medical terminology classes. Employer partners include CVS, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Legal Sea Foods, Hebrew Senior Life, Partners Healthcare, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Mass General Hospital, and many more.
