40% of food produced in the US is wasted while 50 million Americans are food insecure. Food Shift is working to change this.

Food Shift is looking for a Volunteer Development Assistant who is passionate about supporting and growing the community of Food Shift supporters.

This is a unique position for someone who is interested in assisting with a range of nonprofit development tasks, including communicating with donors, tracking donor info, planning and assisting with fundraising campaigns, and providing support on grant writing.

The Volunteer Development Assistant will work closely with our director, Dana and other staff. While this is an unpaid position, Food Shift puts a strong emphasis on volunteer skill-building and we are committed to ensuring a productive learning experience.

We request a minimum time commitment of 10 hours/week and we prioritize applicants who are able to work a few of those hours from Food Shift’s office in Oakland, CA (M-F 9 am - 5 pm).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researching and summarizing new grant opportunities through utilizing The Foundation Center, online research, and other platforms.

  • Reporting promising grant opportunities back to our Grants Team.

  • Using Salesforce and Google Spreadsheets to track potential grant opportunities, opportunities we are applying to, and current funders.

  • Recording upcoming grant deadlines and tasks using Google Calendar.

  • Track our donor outreach efforts through all platforms including email, social media, and traditional mail.

  • Outlining and assistance drafting grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and progress reports.

  • Participating in a weekly 1 hour check in with the Grants Team.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Required:

  • Organized and attentive to detail.

  • Able to keep track of multiple deadlines.

  • Proficient in Google Docs and Google Spreadsheet.

  • Interested in collaborating with other volunteers and staff members.

  • Passionate about our mission.

  • Ability to commit 10 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months.

  • Bonus: experience with Salesforce, grant-writing, or fundraising and/or professional operations/administrative experience.

While we will prioritize candidates who have relevant experience, we are also excited about folks with limited experience but who are eager to learn, passionate about our work, reliable, and able to make at least a 6 month commitment. Working with Food Shift is an opportunity to grow, be creative, wear many hats, and be a part of a fun team working to build a movement to end wasted food. We hope you’ll join us!

To apply, please email your resume, a brief statement about why you’d like to work with Food Shift, where you heard about this opportunity and your time availability to volunteer@foodshift.net, with the subject line "Grant Assistant." Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
