4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps members teach hands-on science activities in an afterschool setting at Title I elementary and middle schools in the Austin, TX area. Members serve at-risk youth during afterschool by providing hands-on, project based science programs in five core areas (Animal Science, Youth Gardening, Natural Resources, Engineering, and a rotating topic that changes every year). Members lead classes 3-4 days a week and may assist another instructor 1 day a week. Members develop semester unit plans for each of their lead classes using a combination of predetermined lessons and lessons they create. Full Time members also serve on a morning assignment team and volunteer in an elementary school 2 mornings a week, and complete an independent project during the spring. Typical Full Time service hours are 9:00am - 6:00pm, Mon - Fri with an additional 15 hours of outreach required. Most programs run Mon-Thurs from 2:30-6:00pm; members should expect to teach at multiple school sites during the week (mileage is reimbursed between work sites). Fridays are used for planning, team meetings, service and program reporting, and trainings.
Requirements
Experience working with youth (experience leading groups of youth preferred)
Commit to a term of service January 3, 2017 - June 15, 2017
Serve a total of 1700 hours (40-42.5 hours a week)
Typical hours are Monday - Friday from 9am - 6pm
Have a car and driver’s license (or reliable transportation)
Must consent to 4 part criminal background check
A positive attitude and willingness to learn new things!
