Choice Food Program
Choice Food Program's shelves are stocked and ready to go!

Many Philadelphians have difficulty getting out of the house to grocery shop or are food insecure. You could make a difference! Come and volunteer at the Mitzvah Food Program NE as a volunteer food packer or driver. We have a great team, but the need is great too, so we are expanding our delivery area and clientele to ensure that those who are not mobile have the food they need. We assist anyone who needs our help in our service area.

Join us! Pack food, drive a delivery route, or assist clients.

We are located at KleinLife in Far NE Philly off Red Lion Rd. In addition, the Mitzvah Food Program has other pantry sites around NE Philly, Center City, and Bala Cynwyd.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mitzvah Food Program is to provide food and basic staples in a caring and dignified manner community members who are in need, and to educate and advocate on their behalf. Our five pantries distribute nutritious food to all who are in need, regardless of race, income, gender, age or religion.

Description

The Mitzvah Food Program was piloted in 1996 to alleviate hunger and malnutrition among at-risk families in the Greater Philadelphia region.
With broad-based support from the region’s Jewish community and hunger relief agencies, the Mitzvah Food Program, which initially distributed food through a single community site, has expanded its geographic reach throughout Philadelphia and into the region’s lower-income suburban neighborhoods.

The Mitzvah Food Program benefits from both the support of an advisory committee made up of active community members, local nutritionists, and site leaders and a team of dedicated volunteers that keep our pantries and deliveries running smoothly. We also work with local and state hunger relief organizations, synagogues, and community organizations to acquire low-cost food staples and with volunteer groups throughout the region to organize food drives.

During 2018-2019, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Mitzvah Food Program distributed 841,206 pounds of food to 7,846 clients.
