Hawaii Literacy offers free English classes at Mayor Wright and Kuhio Park to residents of public housing. Classes are built around developing the student’s capacity to reach their personal, educational, and career goals. Interest in these classes have been growing, but one of the biggest obstacles adult students face is that they are trying to care for their kid(s) while attending class.

We are looking for caring volunteers to support these parents and help them to focus on developing the literacy skills needed to break the intergenerational cycles of poverty and under-education.

Volunteers will help the adult students who attend and the ELL Instructor by delivering fun and educational activities to the children of parents attending classes. If you would be interested in selecting and developing your own activities, then we can provide you with resources and guidance. Alternatively, we can prepare and provide activities that you could do.

It is likely that there will only be 1-2 kids to start with, as parents are still learning about our program. If no children show up, we hope that volunteers would be willing to provide support to the Instructor by helping the adult students or by preparing activities for the next class.
