Committee Members Needed to Award Travel Scholarships

ORGANIZATION: Hostelling International New York

HI New York City Travel Scholarship Committee Members will provide oversight for and manage the HI USA travel scholarship program in their local community. Committee members will be collectively tasked with developing their local program with the support of HI USA staff and resources.

Starting in Jan 2017, we will begin recruitment for our international scholarship called Explore the World. This scholarship includes awarding $2,000 for international travel. Travel must include either an educational and/or volunteer component. We are looking to recruit less traveled individuals and/or individuals with less resources for travel to encourage travel and exploration for all.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Attendance at three mandatory meetings to be scheduled on committee availability

  • Assist in marketing the travel scholarship program in local community

  • Read local community applicant essays and score them based on HI USA standard grading rubric

Desired skills, qualifications:

  • Critical English language skills and reading comprehension required

  • Connections and familiarity with local community, including local universities, colleges, religious organizations and organizations that serve the 18-30 age range and/or communities that have less access to travel and/or less resources for travel preferred

  • Background in education, social work and nonprofits preferred but not required

  • Those who have traveled or have a commitment to community service

  • Belief in the power of travel to build a more tolerant, inclusive world

Time Commitment:

  • Each committee meeting will take place at HI NY & be approximately 2 hours in length for a total meeting time commitment of 6 hours over a three month time period.

  • Additional 6 hours required to read and grade assigned scholarship applications.

  • Ability to meet via conference call and email as needed.

  • Total time required over three months: Approximately 12 hours.
