About

Our ESOL (English as a Second Language) Class Assistant will volunteer under the direction of our inspiring and creative Adult Literacy staff to support Spanish speaking immigrant communities with their English language skill development in our Jackson Heights community center. The ESOL Class Assistant will assist our teachers with classroom administrative tasks and tutor students with specific learning needs.

Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. It is most important to us that participants have a strong desire to support and work with the immigrant community. Willingness to learn, great teamwork, communication skills, and an enthusiastic commitment to supporting immigrants will be required from all volunteers.

FEEL GOOD MOMENTS:

  • Ensure the students enjoy a positive classroom experience.

  • Help our teachers remain informed about student learning progress.

  • Learn about classroom management/planning skills.

  • Gain job skills in a non-profit organization with a long history of community organizing and of defending immigrant rights.

TASKS:

  • Assist ESOL Teacher with organization and filing of student class work.

  • Assist ESOL Teacher with review of student class work.

  • Assist ESOL Teacher with attendance recording/tracking.

  • Assist ESOL Teacher with preparation of classroom material.

  • Assist ESOL Teacher with in-classroom activities/support.

  • Occasionally share your own experiences in education, et al, to add to our highly participatory learning environment.

SCHEDULE:

  • Flexible hours

  • 5 - 8 hrs per week

  • Days are flexible: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reliable and responsible (volunteers are asked to commit to at least 1 cycle of classes and to follow our attendance policy guidelines

  • Interest in Adult Education

  • Interest in the Latino immigrant community

  • Willingness to learn and to work in teams and autonomously

  • Highly Motivated

  • Basic computer skills

  • Prior tutoring experience will be helpful but not required

  • Patient and good sense of humor a plus

  • Background/experience with teaching or education is desirable but not required

  • Volunteers DO NOT need to be bilingual and/or speak Spanish but knowing the language might be helpful at times.
