Lantern Community Services champions the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who have been impacted by or threatened with homelessness. Our clients have been homeless for a long time before they come to us, and even now their low incomes and neighborhoods mean they have limited access to healthy, affordable food.
Our Fresh Food Box program provides fresh fruit and vegetables to our clients every week, to help support and sustain healthy lifestyles and living. Food is distributed in open, communal areas, so that while clients enjoy a simple cooking demonstration they can chat and get to know staff and one another, helping to build social connections and conversation.
Lantern is looking for volunteers to help us set up and help keep the conversation going! If you have experience or an interest in food service, or just like talking to people, we could use your help on any of these days:
Tuesdays in Brownsville from 12:30 - 3:30
Wednesdays in East Harlem from 12 - 3
Wednesdays in Longwood from 1 - 4
Great Lantern volunteers are non-judgmental, reliable, and really care about the problem of homelessness in New York City. If that sounds like you, we'd love to meet you.
