We are looking for 8 volunteers who will be working one-on-one with our dementia residents, once a week, in our "Opening Minds through Art," or OMA, program. Volunteers should be open to the process of art and not the finished art product. The focus of this program is about the relationship between the volunteer and resident as well as the ability for self expression through art.
The program will be held on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:30pm for 10 weeks, beginning on June 11th. There will be two mandatory training sessions on May 28th and June 4th for all volunteers -both sessions will be from 3:15-5PM at Montereau. There will also be an art show for the residents and volunteers after the ten week session on August 27th from 4:30-6:00pm.
We would love to have student volunteers who are interested in older adults and/or art programs. OMA is a wonderful, rewarding program that brings people from different generations together while forming special bonds and relationships.

Mission Statement
"Building bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art."
Description
Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an intergenerational art program for people with dementia. It is aimed at promoting their social engagement, autonomy, and dignity through the experience of creative self-expression. The program was founded in 2007 at Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University. It is grounded in "person-centered" ethics, and has a specific methodology that ensures failure-free creative experiences. There is a growing body of empirical evidence that creative expression improves the physical and psychological well-being of people with dementia.
The intergenerational weekly art program is implemented in group sessions: Up to about a dozen people with dementia do art with the assistance of trained staff members and university student volunteers who work with them on a one-to-one basis. The art-making sessions culminate in a gallery exhibition celebrating the artists’ accomplishments while educating the public about the creative capacities of people with dementia.
