Each year, Union Settlement makes the holidays brighter for hundreds of East Harlem families in need. More than 47% of the children in our community live below the poverty level, and the need is great. The holidays, in particular, provide a stark reminder to our neighbors of how difficult it is just to "get by." Therefore, we make a special effort to assist our neighbors during the holiday season. For Thanksgiving, we distribute packages of groceries and deliver meals to members of the community.

Come volunteer with us on Monday, November 21st and/or Tuesday, November 22nd and help pack food bags filled with turkeys, canned goods and fresh produce. These bags will be distributed to East Harlem families who will be stopping by our flagship building on these 2 days.

We welcome both individual volunteers and volunteer groups. Volunteers can sign up for 1 or more shifts:

10am - 1pm (1 spot left for Tuesday)

1pm - 4pm (2 spots left for Tuesday)

4pm - 7pm (This shift is now full for both days.)

Interested volunteers and groups can email volunteers@unionsettlement.org with the subject "Thanksgiving Food Drive Volunteer."

Mission Statement

Union Settlement is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.

Description

Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
