BookWorks is an early childhood literacy program which brings together volunteer readers and children from disadvantaged environments. The aim of the program is to encourage a love of reading and to get books into the hands and homes of kids who might otherwise not have them.
Volunteers read to children at Head Starts or other pre-K locations and then present each child with a personalized book to take home. Volunteers are matched with a reading location convenient to their home or work, and subsequently coordinate a schedule directly with the center staff.
Opportunities are available in Marion, Sumter, Highlands, Hernando, Polk, Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties.
Volunteers must first attend orientation; training and all materials are supplied by BookWorks. Volunteers must provide their own transportation.
