Imagine trying to navigate your adult life in a foreign country where you speak very little of the native language. Could you write a grocery list? Read an application for employment? Help your children with their homework?
For some adults in Allen County this scenario is very real. The Literacy Alliance has teamed up with East Allen County Schools to provide free English language classes to parents of their students in order to allow the parents to play a more active role in their children's education.
This posting is for intermediate classes, and we are seeking volunteers Monday and Tuesday from 9:00-11:30. Interested tutors do not need to speak a second language.
Volunteers will assist small groups and/or individual students with reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities as directed by the teacher.
Skills/Experience: No specific skills or experience are required--only a positive and patient attitude! Tutor training provided. Many of the students are rather low-level readers and English speakers, so progress can be slow.
