Mission Statement
Rocking the Boat is an energetic youth development organization with a primary goal of developing self-confidence and esteem among high school aged youth in the inner city. We achieve this aim with a hands-on, fun, challenging program one wouldn?t expect in the middle of New York ? by building traditional wooden boats and rowing them on the Bronx River.
Description
Rocking the Boat is a traditional wooden boatbuilding and environmental education program based out of the southwest Bronx. Taking a hands-on and multi-faceted approach to education and youth development, Rocking the Boat runs one of the most dynamic and effective after-school and summer programs in New York City. Our method of interconnecting every activity ? building the boats from scratch, learning to row and sail them, and using them to restore the Bronx and East Rivers ? enables Rocking the Boat to reach students at successively deeper levels. All students are eligible to receive a variety of academic credits, including math, science, technology, physical education, and community service credit at their high schools with their successful completion of the program. The Student Advocate, an in-house social worker who offers monitoring, guidance, and counseling to all students, significantly deepens the programs? impact and relevance. At Rocking the Boat, though kids build boats, truly our purpose is for boats to build kids.
