Tutor students and assist teacher in multi-level vocational English class for immigrants and refugees. Topics include improving English and communication skills to obtain employment, job search and job retention techniques, orientation to the American workplace, financial literacy and life skills. Assist students individually or in small groups to help them complete in-class tasks, including computer work and group activities.
JVS launched this new "English for Advancement" program in Dorchester in September for clients who want to improve their English skills in order to gain employment. In addition to English classes, clients receive career coaching including job search assistance, resume, cover letter writing and interview preparation.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Related experience is welcome, but not necessary--training will be provided.
- Interest in working with people of various linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds.
- Empathy for the challenges of learning a new culture and a new language.
Classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm. Volunteers may choose one or more classes.
Accessible by T (train or bus), or by car--parking is available on site.
