Hands On Charlotte manages weekly tutoring sites Monday through Thursday evening. They take place at library branches and with a youth mentoring organization. Volunteers can sign up whenever they can attend, at least once a month is preferred.
Volunteers will pair up with students (primarily Elementary) and help them with various homework assignments. These are very informal tutoring sessions and there are other tutors & library staff available to assist you with when needed.
Spanish speaking volunteers are very helpful for this project.
Homework assignments vary from student to student, here are some examples:
- Spelling Words
- Reading Comprehension
- Multiplication tables
- For some of the occasional older students work can be geometry, science worksheets, or book reports
Hands On Charlotte recruits volunteers and then leads them in community service projects. We provide a trained volunteer for every project.
All adult volunteers first register on our website and then complete an orientation session. All volunteers must pass a criminal background check and pay a one-time $20 engagement fee. Volunteers then receive access to sign up for opportunities on our web site.
