Title: Membership Intern - Winter/Spring 2017
Department: Membership
Reports To: Membership Associate
Type of Internship: Part-time unpaid internship
Who You Are
You're an innovator who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment, balancing interactions with people with in-depth research that supports the mission of the Museum. You dig into the why and how leading projects from conception to successful completion/launch, making connections between internal and external audiences. You know how to have fun, put people at ease, and you don't take yourself too seriously. Last, but not least, you understand - or want to learn - that membership is more than just raising money; it's about fostering relationships and creating sustainable impact.
What You'll Do
You'll research how young people in Boston interact with arts and culture and how they allocate their time and financial resources. You'll cultivate a sense of how the Museum can better engage a millennial audience. You'll also provide insight into area universities and colleges - their student and faculty sizes and demographics; the ways they communicate to their students; any arts and cultural offerings; and how they engage their students as a community. Your insights will inform how the Gardner Museum serves the needs of its audience, particularly a younger one.
- Research tactics and opportunities to acquire, engage, retain younger members
- Discover must-haves to retain a millennial member audience, including communications, dedicated programs, and benefits of membership
- Engage with members and Museum visitors by shadowing frontline staff/Membership Assistant during regular business hours or at events
- Support member service operations and community initiatives, including administrative tasks and marketing communications
- Learn Raiser's Edge and assist database-related projects
What You'll Learn
You'll see how the Gardner Museum interacts with current and prospective members, including members-only tours and events and written communications. You'll also experience how an arts organization can work to appeal to a new demographic. You'll have the opportunity to learn how membership ties into most every other Museum department and how everyone works together to create unique and meaningful experiences for our member community.
Desired Skills and Experience

Description
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is at once an intimate collection of fine and decorative art and a vibrant, innovative venue for contemporary artists, musicians and scholars. Housed in a stunning 15th-century Venetian-style palace with three stories of galleries surrounding a sun- and flower-filled courtyard, the museum provides an unusual backdrop for the viewing of art. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's preeminent collection contains more than 2,500 paintings, sculptures, tapestries, furniture, manuscripts, rare books and decorative arts. The galleries house works by some of the most recognized artists in the world, including Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Manet, Degas, Whistler and Sargent. The spirit of the architecture, the personal character of the arrangements and the artistic display of the enchanting courtyard in full bloom all create an atmosphere that distinguishes the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as an intimate and culturally-rich treasure.
