OVERVIEW

Founded in 2000, The Arts of Life is a local non-profit organization that supports adult artists with intellectual disabilities. Offering alternatives to traditional work programs for people with disabilities, The Arts of Life employs over 60 artists at its professional arts studios in Chicago and Glenview. Here, the artists focus on a variety of art forms including visual art, performance, installation, and music.

The Arts of Life Associate Board is made up of a group young Chicago area professionals who lead fundraising events and actively volunteer for The Arts of Life. Members are committed to the organization’s mission of bringing people with and without disabilities together to create an artistic culture.


RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Attend monthly board meetings

  • Pay annual dues of $50

  • Event-plan and fundraise to support The Arts of Life

  • Approximate time commitment: 4 hours per month (depending on upcoming events)

  • Develop your professional and leadership skills through committee and event chairmanship

  • Leverage your personal and professional networks to further the mission of The Arts of Life throughout Chicagoland

  • Gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the nonprofit sector


BOARD MEETINGS

The Associate Board meets the second Tuesday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Chicago studio located on 2010 West Carroll Avenue. Board meetings are a collaborative space where we receive studio updates, plan our upcoming events, and brainstorm future projects. Outside of board meetings, members spend time building relationships with potential donors and marketing Associate Board events within and outside of their networks.

We ask that people who are interested in joining the board complete our online application at: http://artsoflife.org/forms/associate-board-application .

We ask that potential recruits attend an Associate Board meeting and either take a tour of The Arts of Life or attend an studio event before joining. New members will be notified of their acceptance onto the board after meeting these requirements.

Description

Established in 2000, The Arts of Life is an arts studio for people with and without developmental disabilities. At the studio, we focus on a variety of art forms, including: visual art, performance, installation and music. Our work has been showcased at various Starbucks in Chicago, Caribou Coffee, Winnetka Community House, Adult Down Syndrome Center, and the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC.

The Arts of Life aims to support each other as professional artists in creating a thriving arts community based on cooperative decision-making and mutual respect. We are committed to providing high quality, innovative services for adults with developmental disabilities. The studio focuses on its artists’ needs and strives to exceed expectations.

We love our volunteers (and we always need more of them to love)! Our community thrives and depends on the unique skills and capabilities of everyone involved with The Arts of Life. Our volunteers assist artists with projects, teach new art skills, design databases, plan special events, assist in grant applications, and much more.
