There has been a research based link between motor skills (balance, hand eye coordination, etc) and cognitive skills (reading, writing etc). Children who are lacking motor skills are typically also the students struggling in class. The Motor Moms and Dads program works with students to improve their motor skills. Groups of approx 5 students and pulled fom class and go through a circuit of activites (balance beam, bean bag toss, catch a ball, jumping jacks etc) for approx 10 min. They are then returned to class and the next group is pulled. The goal is to do this twice a week for all Kindergarteners. This is a fun program for the volunteer because students consider it a treat and enjoy this activity. Teachers like this program because students come back to class able to focus more and it has little disruption involved.
