Are you interested in making a positive difference for LGBTQ+ students in our community? Do you believe that every student has the right to attend a safe school that is committed to ensuring that every student is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression?

GLSEN is looking for volunteers that share these values and have an interest in supporting LGBTQ+ students who continue to face bullying, anti-LGBT bias and harassment at their schools. At GLSEN we are fighting everyday for students that face these challenges and we need your help! Volunteer opportunities include:

Student Organizing Committee

Making a positive difference for LGBTQ Youth in our state is at the heart of our chapter’s mission. Student Organizing Committee volunteers support the growth and formation of LGBTQ student clubs and Gender Sexuality Alliances (GSA’s) in schools by providing resources, visiting clubs and assisting in student-lead events. They also bring club leaders together through programming that encourages peer-support, collaboration and leadership development. The committee is always looking for new members to support student programming and expand our chapter’s outreach.

LGBTQ Youth Leadership Conference: Our annual leadership conference is a day long event designed for LGBTQ students throughout the state to connect, share ideas to take back to their GSA's, and participate in workshops featuring LGBTQ community leaders. The 2017 conference speakers were Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and LGBT activist and actor Keiynan Lonsdale featured in the film, Love Simon.

Volunteers assist in conference planning, student/educator outreach, speaker recruitment, coordination with community allies and sponsorship.

Professional Development

Bullying affects millions of students every year and is among the most profound problems schools face. The behavior is particularly harmful to LGBTQ students. However, the presence of supportive educators who can intervene appropriately and effectively to address bullying has a direct correlation with improved educational outcomes for students.

GLSEN Washington would like to train you to help equip educators and school administrators with the tools they need to create safe spaces in their schools for all students and be effective allies to LGBTQ students. The committee is also looking for volunteers interested in reaching out to schools and community organizations to increase awareness of professional development training and assistance in training coordination and resource development.

You do not need to be educator or have prior experience to participate.

Mission Statement

GLSEN is the leading education organization creating safe and inclusive K-12 schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

Description

At GLSEN, we want every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow.

GLSEN Washington State provides training and resources to students, educators and community partners to make Washington schools more inclusive for all students.

GLSEN WA is a volunteer-run organization, meaning every success we have is credited to the dedication of our amazing volunteers. We would not be able to achieve our mission without the passion for equality that underlies the thousands of volunteer hours that are committed each year. It is thanks to their leadership that we are able to do what we do:

  • Provide resources to any educator or student in the state of Washington who requests one

  • Connect with students to build leadership opportunities

  • Provide Professional Development to Educators to make their schools more inclusive

  • Support districts with creating inclusive policies

  • Present an annual conference for educators and students to create space for learning, leading, and networking
