Minds Matter LA 2016 Grads - Ready for College

Minds Matter of Los Angeles provides a rigorous academic program for bright, motivated high school students from underserved communities. As Co-Director of Mentees, you will recruit and help find the most deserving students to join this life-changing program!

You can also visit our website at www.mindsmatterla.org or email us at volunteer@mindsmatterla.org. This role is responsible for recruiting students for the Minds Matter program. The Co-Directors act the liaisons between the high school teachers, counselors and administrators, the students and Minds Matter. They help high schools learn about and promote the program, administer the application process and assist in selecting the new class of students. Once the class is selected, they continue to act as the liaisons between Minds Matter and the high schools. Persons filling this role must be able to attend a Saturday session at least once a month in order to establish a solid relationship with all the students.

Special Interests or Skills Required:

  • Relationships with counselors, principals, or other administrators within LAUSD or at area charter schools (not mandatory, but helpful)

  • Excellent communication skills

Other Helpful Skills/Experience:
  • Previous public speaking experience

  • Strong project management and organizational skills
Program Highlights:
  • Since 1991, 100% of Minds Matter graduates have been accepted to a 4-year college or university

  • Over 90% of our students will be the first in their families to graduate from college

  • From 2012-2015 Our students have been awarded 7 Gates Millennium Scholarships

  • Implemented Financial Literacy program (launched 2014)

Description

Minds Matter supports students in their sophomore, junior, and senior year. Our program offers a unique combination of mentoring support, group instruction, and social-emotional learning. We provide students with the resources and guidance needed to gain admission, enroll, and succeed at rigorous four-year colleges. Support continues during college with internships, professional skills-building, and access to our alumni platform.
