Docent with school group
Docents make a difference in the lives of area schoolchildren every day!

Docents are integral to the educational missions of the Snite Museum of Art and the South Bend Museum of Art. They are volunteer educators who give engaging and interactive tours to adults, families, and school groups. Docents develop their skills and knowledge through ongoing training, research, and continuing education.

Qualities that make a great docent are: the ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, a warm and friendly attitude, a commitment of time and effort, and a sincere interest in art education.

The Snite Museum of Art and the South Bend Museum of Art are looking for people interested in becoming docents. In this unique program, docents are part of the educational programs for both institutions. Training of a new class will begin in March 2017 and run through the summer with monthly classes. Acceptance into the program is dependent on an application and interview. Applications are due January 30. Previous experience with art and/or teaching is not required. For more information and links to the online application, please visit sniteartmuseum.nd.edu or southbendart.org.

About Snite Museum of Art

Location:

100 Moose Krause Circle, Notre Dame, IN 46556, US

Mission Statement

The Snite Museum of Art provides opportunities to enjoy, respond to, learn from, and be inspired by original works of art. As a department of the University of Notre Dame, the Museum supports teaching and research, creates and shares knowledge, celebrates diversity through the visual arts, serves the local community, and explores spiritual dimensions of art.

Description

The permanent collection features over 27,000 artworks and continues to grow through endowment income, gifts of art, and gifts of funds to purchase artworks. Major collection strengths include Mesoamerican art, old master paintings and drawings, nineteenth-century French art, nineteenth-century photography, and the art of Ivan Mestrovic. While our old master collections feature numerous subjects relating to Christianity and Catholicism, our holdings also include Native American, Latino, African, African-American, and contemporary art-as represented within the collection section of this website.

The Museum presents ten to twelve special exhibitions each year, many of which are augmented by scholarly publications. Current exhibitions are described in that section of this website.

One curator of education designs programs for the academic community and a second is responsible for outreach to the local community, primarily to school children.
