Options for Community Living Inc. is a not-for-profit organization serving Long Islanders recovering from mental illness, and other chronic health conditions. The agency offers residential program participants an opportunity to learn horticultural skills through volunteering at its greenhouse in Medford. During the winter months the volunteers focus on holiday craft making. A part-time horticulturist oversees the greenhouse and works with residents to develop horticultural knowledge, craft making skills, and skills that promote independence and job readiness.
The greenhouse is open to residential program volunteers two days each week -- Mondays and Fridays between 9am and 1:30pm. The agency would welcome the assistance of a community volunteer on any given day. On Tuesday - Thursdays, volunteers would help maintain the greenhouse (water) and attend to plants when the Horticulturist is not working (Tuesday - Thursday.) Mondays and Fridays, volunteers can help the Horticulturist and program participants accomplish tasks. Hours are flexible between 9am and 4pm.
