About Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center (TEL HI) and the GNP
Our mission at TEL HI is to enhance the lives of the people in our community. We accomplish this by providing free and low-cost programs and make our community stronger by focusing on helping people. For more information, check our website: http://www.telhi.org. The Garden and Nutrition Program’s (GNP) mission is to educate our participants on gardening, sustainability and nutrition. This is accomplished with regular garden and nutrition lessons where we cover all the basics such as seeding, water, MyPlate, whole grains, etc.
Position Description
The Nutrition Intern will work with the Garden and Nutrition Coordinator to develop and implement nutrition and cooking lessons for TEL HI participants as well as assist with projects related to our Nutrition Program.
The intern will:
- Learn about experiential learning for different age groups
- Gain culinary practice including introductions to seasonality and food safety
- Understand local community health concerns and intervention strategies
- Work in a professional nonprofit office and gain insight into daily operations
- Network with community members, local culinary and public health professionals
Duties for the Nutrition Intern
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist in curriculum development and implementation
- Lead hands-on cooking lessons and demonstrations; including lesson introduction, teaching recipe preparation, etc.
- Assist with on-going projects according to organizational need and individual intern interest/skills
Qualifications
We are looking for an energetic individual with an interest in nutrition. Excellent organization, communication and follow-through are required skills; must be able to receive directions and work independently. Coursework in nutrition or related field, basic food safety or culinary skills preferred, but not required.
Duration and Compensation
The Nutrition Internship is a 10-week unpaid position. The intern is expected to work 5-10 hours per week for the duration of the internship. The internship begins Fall 2016.
