ORGANIZATION: Detroit Historical Society

PURPOSE:

Collaborate with staff to develop graphic design protocol and goals, as well as design and create flexible graphic media for various print and web projects. This is a great volunteer opportunity for individuals interested in expanding their portfolio while donating their creativity, time and talents. The Society will control all rights and reproductions of images submitted for use, yet the volunteer will always be given full credit for their work.

DUTIES:

-Communicate with staff to maintain understanding of the variety of graphic design projects needed by the Society;

-Collaborate directly with the Manager of Retail & Visitor Services to create and design merchandising tools to advance signage and advertisements in museum gift shops utilizing "templates with moving parts", etc.;

-Expand Society’s professional image by creating accessible templates that are flexible and easily manipulated across platforms;

-Aiding the creation of design artwork while adhering to Society brand guidelines;

-Ability to create professional designs that will appeal to the Society’s targeted audience

SCHEDULING:

We ask that candidates are willing to commit to at least 6-12 months of service to the Society and have the ability to volunteer at least one 3-6 hour in-office shift bi-weekly.

There will be a two week trial period for this volunteer position. DHS will coordinate with each volunteer to assign duties that are a best fit for our needs and each individual interest level.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

-Access to and proficiency in graphic design programs i.e. Adobe Creative Suite;

-High organizational skills, detail-oriented and the ability to follow instructions implicitly;

-Ability to work independently and willingness to collaborate with staff from several departments;

-Maintain a strong work ethic;

-Ability to take initiative, set priorities and manage multiple tasks.

TRAINING & SUPPORT:

Volunteers in this role will receive on-the-job training of the Society’s graphic design policies and coordinate directly with staff regarding project expectations on a regular basis to ensure effective communication and time efficiency.
