S.T.E.M.ulating Minds Instructor and Youth

BECOME A SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATH (STEM) VOLUNTEER!

Help middle school and high school students develop a passion for math and science by becoming a dedicated instructor, teaching assistant, or afterschool tutor.

Whether you're great, good or fair at Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), you can help make an impact on inner-city youth. Here's how: The Parris Foundation S.T.E.M.ulating Minds Weekend Enrichment Program has returned for the Spring 2017 session . The program began after a successful summer pilot in 2012, and our subsequent programs have grown to continue to serve middle school students and high school students. With the growing impact on the community, we need your support to continue to bring STEM to our middle school and high school youth throughout New York City . As we expand to more locations to serve more youth, there is a growing need for volunteers!

Our ideal volunteer is enthusiastic about working with youth, can commit to multiple Saturdays, and possesses, at minimum, basic science and math skills. No previous education experience is required. Your passion for science and math coupled with a desire to help New York City youth realize their true potential is all that is required.

Mission Statement

Mission The Parris Foundation is dedicated to promoting educational opportunities and fostering awareness in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) via scholarships and community outreach programs. The Parris Foundation currently fulfills its mission by: providing scholarships to students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds who are enrolled in undergraduate programs in the STEM disciplines with a proven financial need; servicing disenfranchised communities by offering educational opportunities in STEM; collaborating with organizations focused on improving access to technology for low-income families; exposing adolescents and young adults to academic and professional opportunities in STEM

Description

Vision

The Parris Foundation believes that attracting young people to STEM is the key to closing the achievement gap, and eradicating the disparity in academic performance between disadvantaged and privileged students. In an effort to break the cycle of poverty in underprivileged communities, The Parris Foundation equips disenfranchised students with the tools needed to pursue STEM disciplines, academically and professionally. The Parris Foundation’s programs and partnerships provide out-of-school learning activities to supplement, and enhance in-school learning. The lack of global competitiveness the U.S has experienced in recent years will not improve unless we start molding the next generation of innovators and inventors at a young age. Moreover, the faces of STEM should be representative of the diverse world in which we live.

Exposure to STEM via The Parris Foundation programs:

  • Engage and intellectually challenge students to be innovative, analytical thinkers and problem solvers
  • Create an environment where STEM fundamentals are not just read in a text book, but instead, made applicable to real-world scenarios
  • Nurture students’ innate curiosity to learn and explore
  • Showcase the vast opportunities available in all facets of STEM
