Looking for a unique volunteer opportunity? The Day of the Dead is an annual event organized by The Unity Council that brings Mexico’s colorful Dia de los Muertos traditions to life. This year the event will take place on Sunday, October 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Fruitvale, Oakland.
All volunteers who work 3 or more hours receive a free t-shirt and Lunch provided by Otáez, as well as water and hearty snacks throughout the day. Come join us and your community to be part of this beloved family-friendly event!
Volunteers are needed the entire day of the Festival (in 3-4 hour shifts) to help run the Festival while enjoying live music, the flavors of Latin American cuisine, continuous entertainment, local art and dancing. We encourage volunteers to join in the festivities including skeletal face painting.
Volunteer roles will include the following activities in morning, midday, and afternoon shifts:
- Artist booth unloading and set-up
- General set-up and take-down
- Directing vendors
- Monitoring Festival areas
- Greeting visitors
- Collect donations
- Managing volunteer headquarters and info booths
- Taking photos or videos
Available shifts:
Set-up: 6:00am - 10:00am
Shift 1: 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
Shift 2: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Only available for one or two hours? No problem! Just let us know when you would like to volunteer and we will find the perfect spot for you!

The Unity Council is a community development corporation which was founded in 1964. The Unity Council is based in the Fruitvale District of Oakland and while its influence can be felt throughout the San Francisco Bay area, the Unity Council has focused its primary attention in recent years to creating new social-economic energy and vitality in community and economic development in the Fruitvale neighborhood. To achieve this vital growth, the Unity Council addresses the bond between a community's human and institutional resources and its social, physical, and economic condition. The emphasis on recognizing, and blending these crucial elements are incorporated in all the Council's community development projects.
