DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) is a non-profit organization housed at UMKC that provides 40 Kansas City area middle and high schools with the opportunity to compete in academic debate. In order for us to best serve our students we need volunteers from the community to judge debates and provide mentorship to our member schools. Anyone can judge and help make a difference!
Volunteer Opportunities
- Judging Debates: DKC has both online and on-site training.
- Mentors (Individual): DKC recruits people to individually work with schools. Most mentors have a debate background but it is not required.

Mission Statement
DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) makes excelling at academics fun and rewarding for students across the Greater Kansas City area. Through tournament competition DKC harnesses the excitement of team sports and inspires students to spend countless hours preparing original research, constructing arguments and then engaging in complex debates. We believe all students, but especially those at struggling schools, need access to the critical thinking, communication and research skills that debate completion provides. Debate not only enables self-driven achievement, it empowers youth to develop their voice and engage civic issues.
Description
DKC is a non-profit organization that partners with UMKC and local schools to form one of 20 Urban Debate Leagues across the country. Last year 789 students from 34 area middle and high schools participated in 13 tournament competitions managed by DKC. Over the past three years student participation in our league has increased 150%. However, many schools in our area still lack debate teams, while others only provide limited access. We believe that any student wishing to improve their research, critical thinking and speaking skills through debate should have the chance, and we need volunteers from like-minded individuals and organizations to make that a reality.
