Relay For Life is the signature community fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. The event consists of teams of individuals who take turns walking around a track, at Burlington High School, for a full 12 hours (overnight) to raise money in the fight against cancer. The overnight hour journey is representative of the life of someone battling cancer. By walking through the night, we show how cancer never sleeps, and by coming together as a community, we show that there is always love and support around us for those who need it.

Each event is designed around three core tenets: celebrating survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and fighting back against the disease. The event is supposed to be fun and family friendly, but it also allows for times of reflection, grieving, and healing. Beyond that, Relay For Life is an experience; one that you won’t soon forget. We would be honored to have you as part of our event this year. Would you like to help us create a world with less cancer?

Relay For Life of Burlington is seeking passionate volunteers who are interested in helping to plan this annual event. Volunteers of all skills, abilities, and interests are needed! Opportunites available include helping to: coordinate logistics for the event, obtain and plan event entertainment and acitvities, plan a special dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers, solicit event sponsorships, market the event to the local community, attract new teams and participants, and much more!

Both in person and virtual opportunities are available! Our volunteer committee meets roughly 1 evening per month to check in with each other and stay on track. We look forward to working with you!

Mission Statement

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 2.5 million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 22 percent decline in cancer death rates in the US during the past two decades, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14.5 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We're determined to finish the fight against cancer. As the nation's largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, we're finding cures and ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, visit cancer.org or call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345.
