Dance/NYC Volunteers
Excited volunteers from our Town Hall on July 7th, 2016 at The Duke on 42nd Street.

Dance/NYC thrives on its continued partnerships with enthusiastic volunteers from the NYC community who share our passion for promoting the knowledge, appreciation, practice, and performance of dance in the New York City metropolitan areas. We welcome volunteers as integral members of the Dance/NYC team and value their individual input, personal needs, and skillsets

Dance/NYC is currently looking for volunteers for three Fall events.

  • Dance Educators and Disability on Monday, October 17, 2016, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at The 92Y Warburg lounge, located at 1395 Lexington Avenue.
  • American Dance Recon on Friday, November 4, 2016, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the 92Y Warburg lounge, located at 1395 Lexington Avenue.
  • Disability and National Synergies in Dance on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Barnard College, located at 3009 Broadway.

Volunteer Opportunities

All events include two volunteer opportunities: Week-Of volunteers, and Day-Of volunteers:

Day-Of volunteers volunteer for a minimum of four hours and attend the event. Volunteers are typically scheduled in work stations, including production areas such as registration, guest relations, photography, and communications.

Week-Of volunteers come in for a total of 9 hours over two separate days. One five-hour shift takes place either the day before or the day after the event and is flexible upon availability. Tasks include: support with administration, production, media editing, and post-production. The second four-hour shift takes place on the day of the event. Tasks include: set-up, registration, guest relations, photography, and communications.

Both disabled and non-disabled people are encouraged to participate and volunteer at this event. All volunteers will receive an orientation and a NEW YORKER FOR DANCE TSHIRT.

Description of events:

Town Hall: Dance Educators and Disability

When: Monday, October 17, 2016, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: 92Y Warburg Lounge, 1395 Lexington Avenue, 92nd St and Lexington Ave.

About: In this Town Hall, we turn our attention to dance education and professional pathways for disabled dancers preparing to work in integrated settings as well as in settings exclusively for disabled dancers. Choreographers and educators Victoria Marks and David Dorfman will discuss training opportunities; opportunities for university, graduate, and conservatory education; the joys and difficulties of teaching and taking dance class; and virtuosity and aesthetics. This town hall will be moderated by DDA (Inter)national Voices Curator Alice Sheppard.

Town Hall: Disability and National Synergies in Dance

When: Tuesday, November 15, 2016, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Where: Barnard College, located at 3009 Broadway

About: For the final Town Hall in the series, Judith Smith and Alice Sheppard will discuss some of the learnings of AXIS Dance Company’s regional convenings, their experiences as artists and advocates in the field, perspectives on the other topics of the town halls, and pathways to a future where disabled artists flourish. This town hall will be moderated by DDA (Inter)national Voices Curator Simi Linton.

American Dance Recon

When: Friday, November 4, 2016, from 5:30-7:00PM

Where: 92Y Warburg Lounge, located at 1395 Lexington Avenue

About: Join Dance/NYC and American Dance Abroad for a Town Hall discussion with 10 international dance presenters and producers participating in the fourth edition of American Dance Recon/New York. Made possible with lead support from the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, American Dance Recon is a unique symposium for international presenters to reconnect with American dance and to use it as reconnaissance to better appreciate the diversity of American dance. In this Town Hall, New York City dance makers can learn about participants' work and curatorial styles, and trends in dance abroad.
